Stocks are a share of the ownership of a company. If the company does well, or even if everyone thinks the company is going to do well, the price of the stock goes up. In addition, many companies give a little dividend payment each year to the stockholders, which provides extra value.

Dollar falls to 2009 low

The dollar on Thursday plunged to its lowest level this year against major currencies, and the euro approached a five-month high above $1.39 as worries about swelling US deficits soured investors on US assets. Standard & Poor's announcement that it could downgrade Britain's triple-A credit rating initially weighed on sterling.

Dollar falls

The dollar fell against major currencies on Monday as a rally in US stocks and hopes that the worst of the global economic crisis could be over eroded the greenback's safe-haven appeal. The euro rose to a one-month high above $1.34 after economic data pointed to stabilisation in US home sales and construction. The improved appetite for risk also pushed the Australian dollar to a seven-month high against the dollar.
