Stocks are a share of the ownership of a company. If the company does well, or even if everyone thinks the company is going to do well, the price of the stock goes up. In addition, many companies give a little dividend payment each year to the stockholders, which provides extra value.

Indian shares rise

Indian shares rose 1.99 percent Wednesday erasing intraday losses, as investors went bargain hunting, dealers said. The benchmark 30-share Sensex index rose 193.49 points to 9,901.99, its second straight day of gains. "Fresh buying emerged on bargain hunting. Stronger Asian markets also kept the sentiment up," said Advait Date, dealer at brokerage BHH Securities.

Indian shares rise

Indian shares closed 1.47 percent higher Tuesday, tracking a recovery in global markets as investors shopped for bargains following steep losses triggered by worry about the US economy. The benchmark 30-share Sensex index rose 140.36 points to 9,708.50.
