Stocks are a share of the ownership of a company. If the company does well, or even if everyone thinks the company is going to do well, the price of the stock goes up. In addition, many companies give a little dividend payment each year to the stockholders, which provides extra value.

Singapore shares fall

Singapore share prices closed 2.32 percent lower on Wednesday on continuing concerns about the health of the recession-hit economy, dealers said. The blue chip Straits Times Index fell 43.84 points to 1,843.41 on volume of 1.72 billion shares worth 1.36 billion Singapore dollars (901 million US). Losers led gainers 303 to 172, with 753 issues unchanged.
