Stocks are a share of the ownership of a company. If the company does well, or even if everyone thinks the company is going to do well, the price of the stock goes up. In addition, many companies give a little dividend payment each year to the stockholders, which provides extra value.

European credit indices tighter

European credit indices tightened sharply on Thursday after UBS said it would buy back subordinated bonds to increase capital and the US Federal Reserve announced a surprise cash injection of $1 trillion. By 1627 GMT, the investment-grade Markit iTraxx Europe index was at 184 basis points, according to data from Markit, 7 basis points tighter versus late on Wednesday.
