Stocks are a share of the ownership of a company. If the company does well, or even if everyone thinks the company is going to do well, the price of the stock goes up. In addition, many companies give a little dividend payment each year to the stockholders, which provides extra value.

Nikkei falls 2.7 percent

Japans Nikkei average lost 2.7 percent on Wednesday as LCD TV maker Sharp Corp doubled its loss estimate for the business year just ended while other exporters were hurt by a stronger yen. Sharp slid 6 percent and other companies revising earnings estimates lower, including Kobe Steel, also fell.
