Stocks are a share of the ownership of a company. If the company does well, or even if everyone thinks the company is going to do well, the price of the stock goes up. In addition, many companies give a little dividend payment each year to the stockholders, which provides extra value.

Indian shares edge up

Indian shares rose 0.45 percent on Friday amid sporadic fund buying, as investors chose not to build up big positions ahead of the weekend, dealers said. The benchmark 30-share Sensex index rose 45.39 points to 10,048.49, its fifth straight day of gains. Sentiment has improved on overseas fund buying which has pushed the Indian market up more than 20 percent in three weeks.

Indian shares edge up

Indian shares rose 0.5 percent on Tuesday as the market shed most early intraday gains on political uncertainty ahead of general elections, which start next month. The benchmark 30-share Sensex index rose 47.02 points to 9,471.04, a near six-week high.
