Stocks are a share of the ownership of a company. If the company does well, or even if everyone thinks the company is going to do well, the price of the stock goes up. In addition, many companies give a little dividend payment each year to the stockholders, which provides extra value.

German economy yet to bottom out, says Guttenberg

The recession in Germany, Europes largest economy, has yet to reach its low point, German Economy Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg said on Monday. "The low point has by no means been reached this year," Guttenberg said at a news conference with German employers federation (BDA) chief Dieter Hundt in Berlin.
