Stocks are a share of the ownership of a company. If the company does well, or even if everyone thinks the company is going to do well, the price of the stock goes up. In addition, many companies give a little dividend payment each year to the stockholders, which provides extra value.

Emerging markets: Latin American stocks turn lower

Latin American stocks turned lower in afternoon trading on Friday and regional currencies eased as investors second guessed the benefits of the Federal Reserves massive debt purchase program on global risk appetite. Currencies have rallied in Latin America since the Fed announced a plan to buy back $300 billion in long-dated Treasuries, causing interest rates to sink and spurring appetite for higher-yielding assets.
