Stocks are a share of the ownership of a company. If the company does well, or even if everyone thinks the company is going to do well, the price of the stock goes up. In addition, many companies give a little dividend payment each year to the stockholders, which provides extra value.

Banks, telecoms push European shares down

European equities ended lower for a third straight session on Monday as weaker financials and telecommunications stocks outpaced positive energy shares that tracked a jump in oil prices. The FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares closed 0.7 percent lower at 657.30 points after setting a fresh lifetime low. The index has declined 21 percent so far this year after plunging 45 percent in 2008.

European credit spreads volatile

European credit spreads were volatile on Monday, but the mostly speculative-grade Crossover index retreated from record wides as stock markets recovered some of their losses. By 1714 GMT, the investment-grade Markit iTraxx Europe index was at 208.5 basis points, according to data from Markit, 1.5 basis points wider than late on Friday.
