Stocks are a share of the ownership of a company. If the company does well, or even if everyone thinks the company is going to do well, the price of the stock goes up. In addition, many companies give a little dividend payment each year to the stockholders, which provides extra value.

Indian shares tumble

Indian shares fell 4.78 percent Monday on weak global trends as profit-taking from last weeks swift run-up pushed the benchmark Sensex below the 10,000-point level, dealers said. The benchmark 30-share Sensex index fell 480.35 points to 9,568.14, snapping five straight trading days of gains. Indias stock market had risen more than 20 percent in the past three weeks.
