Stocks are a share of the ownership of a company. If the company does well, or even if everyone thinks the company is going to do well, the price of the stock goes up. In addition, many companies give a little dividend payment each year to the stockholders, which provides extra value.

Financials send Taiwan stocks to nine-month high

Taiwan stocks rose 3.1 percent on Wednesday to a 9-month closing high, as positive consumer confidence data from the US and hopes over a broad trade agreement with China pushed up financial and technology shares. The main TAIEX share index closed up 207.33 points at 6,890.44, recouping the ground lost in the previous two sessions to hit its best finish since August 29, 2008.

Chinese shares surge

Chinese shares closed up 1.71 percent on Wednesday, with oil majors gaining most amid expectations that Beijing may soon hike diesel and gasoline prices, dealers said. The Shanghai Composite Index, which covers A and B shares, rose 44.35 points to 2,632.93 on turnover of 103.3 billion yuan (15.1 billion dollars).

World Bank sees zero growth in Latin America

Latin America and the Caribbean region face zero economic growth for this year and "a rapidly increasing probability" of contraction as the global financial crisis batters exports, commodity prices and remittances, a World Bank official said on Friday.
