Stocks are a share of the ownership of a company. If the company does well, or even if everyone thinks the company is going to do well, the price of the stock goes up. In addition, many companies give a little dividend payment each year to the stockholders, which provides extra value.

FTSE tumbles 3.5 percent

Britains leading share index tumbled 3.5 percent on Monday, led by banks and commodity stocks on jitters following Washingtons rejection of a turnaround plans for US automakers. The FTSE 100 closed 135.94 points lower at 3,762.91. It was the biggest daily percentage fall since early March.
