Stocks are a share of the ownership of a company. If the company does well, or even if everyone thinks the company is going to do well, the price of the stock goes up. In addition, many companies give a little dividend payment each year to the stockholders, which provides extra value.

Euro, sterling Libor down

Interbank money market tensions eased slightly on Monday after HSBCs offer to sell stock to existing shareholders drew strong demand, giving financials an early boost. But the rally lost steam as the session progressed, after US and European stocks and banking shares went into reverse, demonstrating that the problems in the financial sector remain deep-rooted and far from resolved.
