Stocks are a share of the ownership of a company. If the company does well, or even if everyone thinks the company is going to do well, the price of the stock goes up. In addition, many companies give a little dividend payment each year to the stockholders, which provides extra value.

Dollar Libor rates stay higher

Bank-to-bank dollar borrowing costs rose for a second day running on Wednesday, suggesting interbank short-term rates' plunge to record lows since March had gone too far as banks gradually reduce reliance on central bank funding.

Euro falls in London

The dollar rose against the euro on Wednesday after a European Central Bank policymaker said further interest rate cuts couldn't be ruled out, but it fell against a buoyant British pound, which reached $1.60.

US stocks finish firmer

US stocks climbed more than 2 percent on Tuesday as data showing the biggest monthly jump in consumer confidence in six years lifted hopes of an economic rebound, and a brokerage upgrade of Apple Inc drove sharp gains on the Nasdaq. Apple's shares closed nearly 7 percent higher after Morgan Stanley said the iPhone will drive strong earnings growth over the next two years and raised its price target on the stock.
