Stocks are a share of the ownership of a company. If the company does well, or even if everyone thinks the company is going to do well, the price of the stock goes up. In addition, many companies give a little dividend payment each year to the stockholders, which provides extra value.

Brazil stocks rise

Brazilian stocks rose for a third straight day on Friday, led by gains in commodity giants Petrobras and Vale, while the national currency rose more than 1 percent. Sao Paulo's main stock index, the Bovespa gained 1.28 percent to 46,389 points as Wall Street rose.

Brazil stocks rise

Brazils stocks rose on Friday, led by state-run energy giant Petrobras and local steelmakers, while the national currency dipped on concerns a move by the US Federal Reserve to buy long-term bonds would stoke inflation. The Bovespa index of the Sao Paulo stock exchange rose 1.48 percent to 41,035.08 points, heading for a fourth day of gains as investors flocked to emerging market securities.
