Stocks are a share of the ownership of a company. If the company does well, or even if everyone thinks the company is going to do well, the price of the stock goes up. In addition, many companies give a little dividend payment each year to the stockholders, which provides extra value.

Tokyo shares decline

Japans Nikkei stock average fell 1.5 percent on Tuesday, the final day of the financial year, with banks and insurers down on renewed worry about the health of the global financial system in the wake of European bank rescues. Mizuho Financial Group lost over 4 percent in volatile trade, with overall volume moderate as investors awaited details of a fresh Japanese stimulus plan due out later in the day and a G20 meeting of rich and major developing countries later this week.
