Stocks are a share of the ownership of a company. If the company does well, or even if everyone thinks the company is going to do well, the price of the stock goes up. In addition, many companies give a little dividend payment each year to the stockholders, which provides extra value.

Jakarta shares up

Indonesian shares ended 1.3 percent higher on Friday, led by buying in bank, telecommunication and automotive blue chips, dealers said. The Jakarta Composite Index gained 17.02 points to 1,327.43 in moderate trade, helped by gains across Asian markets. "Local sentiment has improved as the regional markets have improved tremendously," analyst John Teja of Ciptadana Securities told AFP.

Jakarta shares surge

Indonesian shares ended 1.1 percent higher on Wednesday, driven by buying in bank and automotive blue chips on hopes that lower interest rates will boost earnings, dealers said. The Jakarta Composite Index gained 14.31 points to 1314.52 in moderate trade. "Todays increase has been triggered by gains in regional markets.
