Stocks are a share of the ownership of a company. If the company does well, or even if everyone thinks the company is going to do well, the price of the stock goes up. In addition, many companies give a little dividend payment each year to the stockholders, which provides extra value.

Latin American stocks drop

Latin American financial markets fell on Friday as investors pocketed part of recent gains, but stocks still recorded their sixth consecutive week of gains. Mexican stocks and currency bucked the regional trend, closing with modest gains after the central bank cut interest rates by 75 basis points. The move was interpreted by, markets as a sign that the government is committed to fighting the sharp economic slowdown plaguing the country.
